No. 23 Allegiant Chevrolet Camaro
Road America Recap
Spencer Gallagher and the No. 23 Allegiant team finished 24th in their first start at Road America. Gallagher had two practice sessions to prepare for Sunday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) Johnsonville 180 and finished 21st in first practice and 16th in the final session.
Qualifying was canceled due to inclement weather and the lineup was set off NXS owner points lining Gallagher up to start the 45-lap race in the 26th position. When the first caution of the day flew on lap five, Gallagher let the GMS Racing team know that he was experiencing tight handling conditions. Crew chief Joey Cohen called for Gallagher to pit road from the 21st position to receive four tires, fuel and no adjustments, restarting him from the 21st position on lap seven. Remaining in the 21st position until the stage one break came to a conclusion on lap 11. Cohen elected for Gallagher not to pit, lining him up eighth on lap 12. Gallagher made his way into the fifth position before the caution came out on lap 15. Gallagher restarted in the fifth position on lap 16 but spun, dropping him back into the 35th position, but battled his way into the 25th spot before the stage two break. Gallagher came to pit road for four tires, fuel, no adjustments and damage repair to the right front, causing him to lose five positions restarting 30th. He made his way as high as the 21st position on lap 25 but then spun in turn six, dropping him back into the 31st position. Cohen called for Gallagher to pit road a final time under green flag conditions for fuel only. In the final 10 laps of the race, Gallagher battled his way into the 24th position where he crossed the start-finish line in his first race at Road America.
“We had a really good car this weekend at Road America. This one is on me completely. I didn’t warm up my breaks enough when I was restarting fifth and that lost a lot of track position that we couldn’t make up. We had a top-10 car for sure. Onto Darlington this weekend.”
– Gallagher is currently 19th in drivers points.
